TC1000: Moby 2.0

After our final review, we realized that Moby could be smoother and livelier. So we've been spending time creating Moby 2.0.

Moby has been stripped, sanded, replastered, and sanded some more. The arm was also fixed because it developed a crack on the way over to the presentation room. We've also resolved the joint issue and refined the overall shape a little bit more. The docking station was also refined to make the visual language blend all together into a cohesive product.

Lots of work, but we're happy with where we're heading now and the process is easier the second time around!

We still need to paint, add the dots, and finalize our presentation to Modo. More images to come!

TOOLS: Final Review

Today was my final review for TOOLS class - presenting the last terms worth of products! As you know, I've been working on ceramic candlesticks, a furniture piece to display the work, and also a sheet metal lamp.

TOOLS: Making the Sheet Metal Lamp

I've never worked with sheet metal before, so this was something completely new to me. It wasn't as difficult as I imagined, but after a few cuts, scraps, and the help of some tools, this is the result!

I am still determining where I want the light bulb, since it works better as a sculpture piece. I'll also be painting the interior white to contrast with the steel.

TOOLS: Sheet Metal Lamp

Our last project for TOOLS class is a sheet metal lamp. I will creating a table lamp that has simple, friendly curves, is organic, symmetrical, and flowy. Since the rest of my projects have been very dynamic, this piece will also compliment and tie everything together.

Here is the form I will be creating out of a sheet of 24 gauge steel.

TOOLS: Furniture

My display stand for my ceramic candlesticks is coming along. Today I filled in cracks with wood filler, and then sanded it. Everything is smooth, but I still need to come up with a solution to a cut made by mistake. I'll probably include an inlay. Here's where it's at now:

I glazed my ceramic candlesticks over the weekend. I'm excited to see the outcome and how the different glazes interact with each other!

For TOOLS class we are creating a furniture piece that will be displaying the slip-casted candlesticks. We are limited to a single piece of lumber, and I'll be working with Alder.

TOOLS: Metal Lamp Inspiration

The next lamp I'll be designing in TOOLS class is a metal lamp using steel rods. It'll be interesting since I haven't had any experience working with welding and metals before -- learning curve ahead!

Below are a few inspirational images for my lamp. I'm staying with the theme of Japanese/Chinese Gardens and looking at different weaving techniques, as well as simplicity, symmetry, and balance.
