Woah, it's been wayyyy too long!
I finally finished a project for Product Design. It's a shelf I designed called the "Booda Shelf" for Design Process class, Spring 2009.
----
Design Brief:
Your task is to design a new bookshelf
The price point we are working towards is $19.99
Remember you are not designing for a specific target group for this product
it should be appealing to a wide demographic, consider how this effects your design.
You will need to include:
-Sketches or computer drawing of your design.
Informational diagrams which address the following questions:
-What materials will it be made of?
Consider the use of waste materials, recycled or recyclable material in your production process.
-What is the Production method? Where and how will it be made
-How can it come apart or be put together? It should be designed for easy assembly by the consumer. Close packing or flat packing of products reduces shipping volume and product cost.
-How can you package it using the least amount of material? Remember these products will be produced in the thousands, and small amounts of materials add up quickly.
-How does your product embody the ethos of simple, human and democratic design that is the hallmark of IKEA products?
This assignment will involve research into production methods and material costs.

Design process and solution:
I found inspiration for this project through everyday things. It's amazing what can motivate you to design and be creative! I hope you guys enjoy this project as much as I've enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) making it.

After a few months, I finally got around to creating a prototype for the shelf. Here are a few images of the Booda Shelf. (Still needs to be sanded, sealed, and painted.)
Still lots of work ahead, but it's a start for now!
-----
Update: Booda shelf is now sanded and smooooooth as a baby's butt! It'll be included in the Senior Product Design gallery opening next week. Reception is on Monday, October 12th, 2009 from 5PM – 7PM, along with Concrete Stool / nightstand. Just FYI!
